Based On The Book By John Steptoe

When a great African king desires a wife, only the most perfect maidens in the land are invited to meet him. Mufaro’s pride and joy, his two daughters of very different dispositions, travel through a mystical jungle and across a deep river to be presented to the king. Along the way, the two girls encounter a number of mysterious situations that unknowingly test their courage, kindness, and strength of spirit. Combining authentic African drumming, powerful choreography, and thrilling original music, the splendor of Zimbabwe and the African continent comes to life on stage in this musical adaptation of the Caldecott Award winning Cinderella tale. Produced by Dallas Children’s Theatre.

Workshop

A folktale is a story handed down from one generation to another by word of mouth. There are several types of folktales: myths, legends, fairy tales, and Märchens. MUFARO’S BEAUTIFUL DAUGHTERS is an example of a Märchen. Its characteristics include a magical land or fantasy setting, and involve an “underdog” who, with the help of magic, obtains a birthright. Using this story as our inspiration, we will create our own illustrated Märchen celebrating African folklore.

Each one-hour workshop is $100 and is limited to 25 students. Workshops are customizable, available year-round, and able to travel to your school for an additional fee.

If you are interested in scheduling a workshop, or would like more information, please call 937-228-7591, ext. 3039.
