Celebrating 10 years of Dayton Skyscrapers!

The EbonNia Gallery in West Dayton, in collaboration with Victoria Theatre Association, will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the DAYTON SKYSCRAPERS ART EXHIBIT project. The DAYTON SKYSCRAPERS art project was designed and curated by Willis “Bing” Davis in 2007 to address several needs within the African-American community. As a result, the community’s understanding and appreciation for the many contributions of African-Americans to the region continues to be enhanced.

DAYTON SKYSCRAPERS is a metaphor for African-American high achievers who have made a mark in their field and role models for inner-city youth in the community,” said Davis. Emerging to mid-career African-American visual artists from the Miami Valley research prominent African-American skyscrapers living or deceased, write an essay about their life and work, and finally feature the skyscraper in an original work-of-art that is displayed in a professional gallery exhibition.

The 10th anniversary of the DAYTON SKYSCRAPERS ART EXHIBIT will recognize the purchase of the first 65 works of the DAYTON SKYSCRAPERS art project by the Dayton Public School system. These 65 pieces are permanently displayed at its new Dayton Boys Preparatory Academy PreK-8 school on West Third Street.

“This provides students with an opportunity to learn in the midst of positive role models who have experienced many of the same obstacles that they face daily, yet they became high achievers,” Davis added.

The DAYTON SKYSCRAPERS 10TH ANNIVERSARY is one of the major programs of Shango: Center for the Study of African-American Art and Culture, the non-profit wing of the Davis Art Studio in the Wright Dunbar Historic District. Corporate support has been received from the Dayton Power & Light Foundation, Rotary Club of Dayton, Westmont Optimist Club of Dayton, Ohio, Bill Pflaum Family Foundation, and from individuals across the Dayton and Miami Valley area.

The 2017 exhibit will be displayed February 6-March 31 at the Schuster Center, during April at DP&L Headquarters in East Dayton, and at the EbonNia Gallery on West Third Street May-July. The exhibit will feature drawing, painting, ceramics, photo, mixed media, and sculpture.
